When I visited Amman, the capital of Jordan, I read that it is known as the "White City" because its buildings have a white facade and appear to be square when seen from above--a pattern of squares arranged in a staggered manner.

From atop Amman Castle Hill, overlooking the city, I was shocked at how unified and harmonious this pattern was. When I got closer to downtown Amman and entered its interior--what they call "the old town"--I saw dilapidated buildings and narrow streets lined with obsolete buses and stores selling imported goods from small shops; this entire scene made me feel very retro . Of course this was just one part of modern Amman: there's also a newer part that looks different.
